Mission Statement

Through intentional interactions with students and relationship building that utilizes the ecology of validation and rooted in the expanded broker and strengths-based case management models, Student Advocacy and Support promotes student success and retention, reduces risk, and enhances overall community wellbeing and safety by identifying needs, removing barriers, leveraging resources, and fostering student self-efficacy and self-advocacy.

Training and National Best Practice Guidance

The Student Advocacy and Support team is trained in student development, behavioral and violence risk assessment, and case management through the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Association, the National Association of Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment, and the Higher Education Case Management Association, respectively.

Student Advocacy & Support Case Management Model

Case managers provide goal-oriented and strengths-based assessment, intervention, and coordination of services to students experiencing physical, emotional, academic and/or psychological difficulties. The Student Advocacy and Support Case Management Model exists at the intersection of the Broker/Expanded Broker Model and the Strengths-Based Model.

Broker/Expanded Broker Model
  • Assisting individuals with obtaining resources.
  • Follow up on resource connection and utilization.
  • Specific action plan developed to meet student need.
Strengths-Based Model
  • Individuals already possess resources to cope and make change.
  • Sees potential in every environment and situation.
  • Uses collaboration as a tool for growth and change.

Medical Withdrawal and Re-Enrollment

A medical withdrawal provides students the opportunity to take time away from campus for the treatment of a mental or physical health condition that impairs their ability to function safely and successfully as a member of the campus community. Students must meet with a Student Advocacy and Support Case Manager to initiate this process.
